Super & Broad Specialty Training
Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Bangalore, is accredited by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, New Delhi, to conduct post-graduate training in super specialties such as Cardiovascular & thoracic surgery (Direct-6 years), Cardiology and Neurosurgery (Direct-6 years), and the broad specialty of Anesthesiology — culminating in a DNB/DrNB degree.
The Institute has been a recognised NBEMS training centre since 2002, with departments serving as DNB/DrNB examination centres and recording a 100% pass percentage.
Trainees learn within a high-volume, completely free super-specialty hospital — gaining exceptional clinical exposure alongside daily academic presentations, mentorship from visiting faculty in India and abroad, and a culture of compassionate care.
DrNB Cardio Vascular & Thoracic Surgery — Direct 6 years
Super-specialty surgical training. Eligibility: MBBS.
DrNB Cardiology — 3 years
Super-specialty training in cardiology. Eligibility: MD/DNB (General Medicine or Paediatrics).
DrNB Neurosurgery — Direct 6 years
Super-specialty training in Neurosurgery. Eligibility: MBBS.
DNB Anaesthesiology — 2 years Diploma / 3 years postgraduate
Broad-specialty training in anaesthesia and critical care. Eligibility: MBBS.
How to Apply
Admission to all specialties is only through the centralised counselling of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) — candidates should follow the NBEMS website for updates.
Stipend as per the policy of the Government.
In keeping with the Founder’s philosophy that education should be given free of cost, all programmes are offered to eligible doctors entirely free.

At Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Residents and faculty are partners in a learning experience that is committed to excellence.
The Hospital plays host to a large number of visiting consultants from within and outside the country, from whom Residents can learn about the latest developments in their fields.
Our team of surgeons and physicians see one of the largest and most diverse patient populations in the country. Therefore the DNB Residents get exposed to the entire gamut of consultations and operations during their training period. Residents are expected to participate in basic clinical research projects and are encouraged to present and publish their findings at national meetings and in leading journals.
Goals of the DNB Program
- Competence: Residents will learn to deliver excellent and comprehensive health care in their respective Specialties.
- Quality: The Resident will learn the skills of quality improvement, utilization management and risk management in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The system taught will assure that high quality care is provided.
- Holistic Patient Care: Provide preventive, promotive, curative, and rehabilitative medical care tailored to individual patient needs and local epidemiological patterns.
- Evidence-Based Practice: Train residents to critically evaluate scientific literature, use diagnostic tools and investigations cost-effectively, and minimise patient discomfort.
- Emergency & Life Support: Ensure proficiency in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) to handle acute critical care and emergency scenarios.
